Movie Review : OMG! Oh My God

Oh My God is a brave step for a film-maker, because the topic it deals with is highly controversial.

The movie is a about a family man, Kanji Lal Mehta, played to perfection by Paresh Rawal. Kanji sells Hindu idols but is ironically,a non-believer. He finds himself in midst of financial

crisis and is refused his insurance amount because what happened to him was an 'Act of God'.

Kanji, determined to get his insurance amount, files a case against God, a case no lawyer agrees to fight. Kanji fights the case himself. Yes, the movie is unrealistic and this idea absurd. But what follows is an interesting turn of events. He pleads his own case and puts forward some very logical and unanswerable arguments. His arguments make him a sensation and win him support.

Akshay Kumar, plays modern-day Krishna and does a good job as God. He guides him,
the way Krishna guided Arjuna and later accepts the atheist Kanji as his true follower.

Another notable performance is that of Mithun Chakraborty , who plays the role of a weirdo 'spiritual' leader.

The film is a humorous satire on both, commercialization of religion and the traditions of the past. There is an instance where a god-man  actually claims to have a copyright on God.

The movie is unrealistic and some sequences are absurd. But it didn't promise realism after all. I feel some sequences could have been executed better. I should not have depended so much on Paresh Rawal's performance.

The movie gives a message,a loud and clear one, that God is omnipresent and we don't need to go to a special place to pray to him and that we need to be 'God-loving' rather than being 'God-Fearing'. It is a good to see a film on such a sensitive topic getting good response in India, where religion is a very important part in life.

My rating : 3.5/5 ( Watchable)
